Adjustable louvred shutters: choose your light and privacy

External louvred wooden shutters sit outside the glazed window or French door. Their slats give the facade a distinctive rhythm, while adjustable louvres let you change the balance of daylight, shade and privacy throughout the day.

Choose daylight, shade and privacy

Tilt the louvres to soften bright sunlight, admit more daylight or screen views into the room. With the glazed window open, the gaps between the slats can also allow air to pass. We can discuss fixed louvres where a traditional, unchanging slat arrangement suits the design.

Pair shutters with your windows and French doors

The glazed joinery and the external shutters are separate elements, designed to work together. We consider the frame, reveals, handles, opening clearance and position of the shutter leaves, so the finished opening feels coherent inside and out.

Solid boarded shutters with traditional Z bracing

For the character of a farmhouse or a solid timber screen in front of the glazing, choose boarded wooden shutters. Known in Sicily as portelloni or scuroni, these external shutters have opaque leaves rather than louvres: open them for daylight and close them for privacy and darkness.

On a restored Sicilian farmhouse, solid boarded shutters can complement simple stone surrounds and the rhythm of the original facade. For country homes around Ragusa and Syracuse, we consider the board layout, strap hinges and timber finish together, following the details of the individual building.

See the construction on the reverse

Traditional boarded designs combine solid timber boards with Z bracing on the reverse and a dedicated fastening. The diagonal braces are part of the construction and its country character. We shape the dimensions, board layout and opening arrangement around your property.

First-choice solid wood, colours and careful finishing

We work exclusively with first-choice solid wood. Options include Okoumé, oak and chestnut, selected around the shutter design, chosen finish and exposure. The material is part of the specification we discuss with you, rather than a detail left until production.

A timber tone or a colour that belongs to your facade

Show the grain with a timber finish or choose a painted colour to suit stone, render and neighbouring joinery. Profiles, proportions and finishing details can be coordinated with your windows and entrance doors for a considered result across the home.

Four-coat Long Protection finishing

Careful surface preparation and our four-coat, water-based Long Protection finishing cycle complete the timber work. We explain the care suited to your finish and position, so you know how to look after the shutters from the start.

Hinges, fastenings and opening details chosen for the job

Strap hinges, gudgeons, espagnolette fastenings and hold-open fittings influence how an external shutter looks and works. We choose the arrangement around the leaf size, weight, fixing position and exposure, with attention to the masonry and the space available beside the opening.

For replacement installations, we use new hinges and plan suitable fixings for the new leaves. Where space is restricted, we can discuss folding arrangements or a different opening configuration before manufacture.

Plan the whole opening for greater security

If security is a priority, we can consider external shutters alongside Extra Gold wooden windows, with enhanced locking hardware and an appropriate glazing specification. We define the complete arrangement in your quotation, including the glazing, fixings and closing details.

For Maltese houses of character, Gozo farmhouses and Sicilian homes

Your shutters should belong to the building. For a limestone house in Malta or a farmhouse in Gozo, we can work from photographs and drawings to discuss suitable proportions and colours. For a home in Sicily, the same approach respects the stonework, facade and way you use each room.

For coastal positions, tell us how exposed the property is to sun, wind and salt spray. This helps us discuss the timber, finishing and hardware specification, together with the care the shutters will need.

Looking for Sicilian internal shutters instead?

Many owners restoring Sicilian country houses choose wooden windows with integrated internal shutters, known as scuri or scuretti. If this is the traditional appearance you want, explore our windows with Sicilian internal shutters. External louvred or boarded shutters can be considered for openings where they suit the facade, exposure and space available.  We can help you compare the options where narrow streets or limited outside space affect the design.

Questions about external wooden shutters

What is the difference between louvred and solid shutters?

Louvred shutters use slats. Adjustable slats let you change the amount of light passing through. Solid boarded shutters have opaque leaves and no adjustable slats, giving you a choice between an open view and a closed timber screen.

Can external shutters be supplied with new wooden windows?

Yes. We can design external shutters together with your new wooden windows or French doors, coordinating proportions, finishes and opening details. For replacement shutters over existing joinery, send photographs so we can assess the arrangement.

How much do bespoke wooden shutters cost?

The quotation depends on dimensions, number of leaves, timber, louvre or board design, finish and hardware. Delivery and any installation service are also specified. Send approximate sizes and photographs to start a proposal for your home.

What care will the shutters need?

Keep the surfaces clean and check the finish, hinges and fastenings periodically. Follow the care instructions supplied for your products. Exposure matters: a sheltered opening and a facade facing the sea may need different attention.

Can I order from Malta for a property in Sicily?

Yes. Tell us where the property is and share your photographs or plans. We can discuss your project in English and agree the design, measurements, delivery and any installation arrangements before manufacture.

What warranty applies to my external shutters?

We explain the warranty applicable to the shutters, materials and finish in your written proposal, together with care requirements and exclusions. This gives you clear information about the products you are ordering.

Tell us about the shutters you have in mind

Share the property location, photographs of the openings, approximate dimensions and the style you prefer. We will help you choose between adjustable louvres and solid boarded shutters, then prepare a proposal with the details of your specification.

Your initial measurements help us start the conversation. Final dimensions and fitting arrangements are agreed before production.
