Bespoke Wooden Sliding and Bifold Doors for Malta and Sicily

Open your living space to a terrace, garden or a favourite view. Milito Infissi makes wooden sliding and bifold doors to measure in Giarratana, Sicily, for homes in Malta, Gozo and across Sicily. Bring generous glazing and the warmth of solid wood into your home, with an opening designed around the way you live.

Choose broad sliding panels for an uninterrupted outlook, or folding doors that gather to the side when you want a wider passage. We help you plan the layout, timber finish, glazing and operating system directly with our workshop.

Choose how your opening works

The view matters, but so does the space you need to walk through. The right system balances the size of the glazed panels, the clear passage when open, furniture positions and the space available outside.

Lift-and-slide doors: broad glass panels, parallel movement

A lift-and-slide door opens by turning a long handle that lifts the moving panel slightly from its closed position. The panel then travels along its track, parallel to the neighbouring glazing. Lowering it into the closed position brings it back against the seals.

This arrangement suits living rooms and kitchens facing a patio or garden, where you want a wide view without a door swinging into the room. Our Gran Luce lift-and-slide range offers a panoramic approach to larger glazed openings, with the panel layout chosen for your project. Sliding panels overlap when open, so the clear passage is smaller than the overall glazed width.

Bifold doors: panels that fold to the side

Wooden bifold doors use connected glazed panels that fold and gather to one side, or to both sides where the chosen layout allows. They can open up a larger proportion of the opening than a conventional two-panel slider, creating a generous connection with a terrace or garden.

The folded panels still need space. We plan their number, folding direction, stacking position and everyday access around your room and the area outside. G-U folding hardware supports the movement, with the configuration selected for the size and weight of the panels.

Tilt-and-slide and pocket arrangements

For selected openings, a tilt-and-slide system combines a tilting ventilation position with a panel that moves out of the frame and slides parallel to the fixed glazing. A pocket sliding arrangement can conceal panels within a prepared wall cavity. These options depend on the available wall construction and the requirements of the opening, so they are considered at the design stage.

Plan the opening, the threshold and the space around it

A large glazed door works best when its frame, floor levels and surroundings are planned together. We review the overall opening and the passage you want to use, then develop a layout with your architect or installer where needed.

  • Clear passage: the usable opening after sliding panels overlap or folding panels are stacked.

  • Panel movement: furniture, curtains and outdoor space must allow the chosen system to operate.

  • Threshold and drainage: low-threshold options are assessed with the internal and external floor levels, weather exposure and water drainage.

  • Access and installation: large panes and frames need a suitable route into the property and an agreed installation plan.

A low threshold can make the transition easier, but the finished detail must suit the building. We agree the threshold arrangement before manufacture rather than assuming the same solution will work in every home.

Glazing selected for the room and its exposure

Large glass areas deserve a considered specification, particularly in bright Mediterranean locations. We discuss orientation, shading, thermal comfort and safety before selecting the glazing. Low-emissivity, solar-control and laminated safety glass options can be assessed as part of the complete door design.

For exposed coastal properties in Malta, Gozo or Sicily, tell us about the position of the opening and its exposure to wind, rain and salt air. These details help us select the finish, hardware and installation approach, and explain the care your doors will need.

Integral Venetian blinds and interior shading

Venetian blinds inside the insulated glass unit can provide adjustable light and privacy without a loose blind hanging across the door. Manual or motorised controls can be considered where compatible with the glazing, panel dimensions and opening system.

Interior roller blinds or ceiling-mounted curtains are another option. We plan their position so that they remain clear of moving handles and panels. If you prefer external wooden shutters, their feasibility needs to be considered with the width of the opening and the space around it.

Give a large opening the character of real timber

We work with first-choice solid wood, selecting the timber and finish to complement your floors, walls and the rest of your joinery. Natural wood tones reveal the grain; painted finishes can bring a softer or more contemporary character to the room. Our four-coat, water-based Long Protection finishing cycle includes careful preparation between stages.

G-U handles, tracks and operating hardware are selected for the chosen system and panel weight. Handle design and finish are agreed with you. Where reinforced locking or safety glazing is required, we assess compatible options as part of the complete specification.

Fixed glazing can be combined with opening panels to follow the architecture and bring light into the space above. The layout is drawn around the building, rather than forcing every glazed section to open in the same way.

Sliding doors within a Sicilian farmhouse renovation

A restored farmhouse can combine traditional windows in the older rooms with a timber sliding or folding opening towards a garden, courtyard or terrace, where the renovation design provides a suitable opening. We coordinate the timber finish and proportions with the other joinery so the large glazed area belongs to the overall project.

For bedrooms and traditional openings, explore our windows with Sicilian internal shutters. The sliding system and the windows with scuri are specified separately, with the right arrangement for each room.

Practical questions about sliding and bifold doors

Which gives me the wider clear opening: sliding or bifold doors?

Bifold doors usually open up more of the overall width by gathering the panels to the side. Sliding doors keep broad glass panels parallel, with part of the opening remaining glazed. We compare the usable passage and the stacked-panel space for your proposed layout.

Can the doors have a level threshold?

Low-threshold solutions may be possible. The final detail depends on the selected system, drainage, weather exposure and the floor levels on both sides. Tell us early if step-free access is a priority so it can be included in the design assessment.

Can a large sliding door be motorised?

Motorisation can be assessed for compatible lift-and-slide configurations. It needs to be planned with the selected hardware, panel dimensions, electrical supply and controls before manufacture.

Can I add Venetian blinds inside the glass?

Yes, where the chosen glass unit and door configuration allow it. We check the available sizes and the manual or motorised control arrangement during specification. Interior curtains or roller blinds offer an alternative.

What determines the price of a bespoke sliding door?

The opening dimensions, timber, number of panels, glazing, hardware, finish and threshold detail all affect the price. Delivery, access and installation requirements also form part of the proposal. Send a drawing or approximate measurements for an initial discussion.

How do I keep the doors operating smoothly?

Keep the running tracks free of grit and debris, follow the supplied cleaning and hardware care instructions, and check the exterior finish periodically. Exposure and use determine the maintenance needed. Leave adjustments to a qualified technician when a panel becomes difficult to operate.

Start with your view and a few measurements

Tell us where the doors will be fitted, the approximate width and height of the opening, and whether you prefer sliding or folding panels. Photos, a floor plan and a note about the terrace or garden level help us understand the project.

You buy directly from the workshop that makes your doors. For a home in Malta, Gozo or Sicily, we discuss the specification, delivery and installation arrangements with you before the order is confirmed. If you are based in Malta and renovating a property in Sicily, tell us both your contact location and the project location.
